Give One Get One

Here is a great way to do some good and get something cool for yourself. Give an XO Laptop and get one for yourself!

Give One Get One

Between November 12 and November 26, OLPC is offering a Give One Get One program in the United States and Canada. This is the first time the revolutionary XO laptop has been made available to the general public. For a donation of $399, one XO laptop will be sent to empower a child in a developing nation and one will be sent to the child in your life in recognition of your contribution. $200 of your donation is tax-deductible (your $399 donation minus the fair market value of the XO laptop you will be receiving).

For all U.S. donors who participate in the Give One Get One program, T-Mobile is offering one year of complimentary HotSpot access. Find out more.

Please be aware that we will make every effort to deliver the XO laptops by the holidays, but quantities are limited. Early purchasers have the best chance of receiving their XO laptops in time for the holidays, but we cannot guarantee timing.

The Road Not Taken

Another quote for you. I have always loved this one, especially the last line.
How many times have you had to choose a direction to go…and that decision made all the difference?

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Robert Frost, The Road Not Taken.

Eating Local in the Winter

For the past 6 months or so I have been trying to  eat local as much as possible.  Because I live near some of the richest farm land in the world, it has been fairly easy…until now.   The farmer’s markets have closed, my garden is done for the winter, and I didn’t do much preserving this year.   The local health food store has a few items.  Some cabbage and apples.  I have a bunch of chestnuts from a local chestnut tree.  But that is not enough to make a meal!

Collecting Quotes

It looks like I will be adding a catagory for quotes.  Here is a quote from C.S Lewis that I just found.

Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket–safe, dark, motionless, airless–it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable. ~ C.S. Lewis

Rejection

I was rejected today, in a big way.  I had applied for a job that I was 99.9% sure I was going to get. The job description described my skills to a T.  The application process was long and drawn out consisting of tests and interviews.  I did well on all of them.   Today they called, I didn’t make it to the top 3.  Ouch!

So how do you deal with rejection.  Continue reading “Rejection”

SEO and Website Tools

I just found a great site for webmasters.  It is a web directory that has a ton of free tools to help you get the most from your website.  iwebtool.com has tools to check your Google and Alexa page rank. It has a keyword analyzer, a meta tag generator, and even a tool that will check your site for broken links! (I know a few websites I’d like to send that tool to!)  There is  a lot more there.   When you get a chance pop on over to iwebtool.com , it will be worth your time!

Why are We So Fat?

It is a popular topic in the media these days. Why are we so fat? Of course, not me, not you, just the other 30% of adults who are overweight or obese.

Fingers are pointing everywhere, and diet books are bestsellers. You can almost guarantee that and TV program will have ads about the weight loss pill that really works!  Now you can even buy drugs over the counter that will keep your body from absorbing fat. (Watch those side effects though!)

Tell Me About Yourself

Here is a quote I came across today.  For some reaon it resonated with me.

Tell me about yourself now, simply, one thing at a time.
Who are you? Where do you come from? What parents? What place?
What manner of ship did you sail in?
Why did the sailors abandon you here?

Homer, The Odyssey, Book I, ll.197-99
