Always Keep Checking

EDIT: Back to the old theme. This one worked well for me in the past. It should work well in most browsers. Please let me know if it does not.

EDIT: Working with a temporary theme for now. I know it doesn’t look pretty right now, but this theme did work on my other computer. Hope to be back to something nice soon.

Today I fired up my old computer. The one that doesn’t have FireFox or a widescreen monitor. I needed to get some pictures off the hard drive for a project I am working on. While I had this old computer up and running I thought I would check out my sites and see how they looked. All was well, until I got here. And I was so happy with the theme! In IE, without a widescreen, this template does not work well. The sidebar is pushed down to the bottom of the page. Not a good thing! I tried tweaking the CSS, but with no luck. So once again I am looking for a new theme. So for all of you that have been annoyed by my sidebar, I’m sorry. I hope to have that fixed real soon.

Happy Easter!

I am spending the day with my family. I hope you can do the same. Here are some Easter Quotes for you from QuoteGarden.

Our Lord has written the promise of the resurrection, not in books alone, but in every leaf in spring-time. ~Martin Luther

The joyful news that He is risen does not change the contemporary world. Still before us lie work, discipline, sacrifice. But the fact of Easter gives us the spiritual power to do the work, accept the discipline, and make the sacrifice. ~Henry Knox Sherrill

Easter tells us that life is to be interpreted not simply in terms of things but in terms of ideals. ~Charles M. Crowe

On Easter Day the veil between time and eternity thins to gossamer. ~Douglas Horton

Sleep

Lately I have been feeling the need for more sleep. I have been getting up at my normal time, but instead of being able to stay awake until midnight, or even 1am, I have been getting tired around 9 or 10pm. I have been going to bed earlier, but I am still feeling sleep deprived, so I thought I would do a little research on sleep before I turn in for the night.

I found that being sleep-deprived can cause all sorts of trouble. From the obvious impaired concentration and poor judgment, to the not so obvious increase in diabetes, depression, and heart disease.

It is not true that all adults need 8 hours of sleep per night. Some can get by with as little as 5 while others may need 9 hours of sleep to fully refresh. You know you are getting enough sleep if you can wake up in the morning without an alarm clock.

So while getting lots of sleep can feel like an indulgent luxury, actually it is important for both your physical and mental health. Thank goodness tomorrow is Saturday, I am going to do something healthy and sleep in!

Fast Food Burgers Revealed

Have you ever seen anything that just turned your world around? Just yesterday I enjoyed a small order of McDonald’s french fries. Now I don’t think I’ll be able to eat another one again. Please watch the following video before you feed your child another Happy Meal.

Now I know you can’t believe everything you see on the internet, so I checked out Snopes.com and I ran a Google search and it appears that this video is legitimate. Real food rots, so I am not sure what McDonald’s is serving. Anyone else giving up McDonalds?

Cooking Irish

I am pleased as punch today! On this lovely (and sunny) St. Patrick’s Day my favorite author, has agreed to guest post for me! If you enjoy this you will enjoy reading her mysterious blog. So now please enjoy Marilynne’s Cooking Irish.

I haven’t a drop of Irish blood in me, but today I decided to cook scones and corned beef and cabbage for dinner. It was good.

Our granddaughter was here with us. She’d been invited up to harvest some fresh peas for herself. She and her grandfather spent a good part of the afternoon picking peas. If you’re not a gardener, I will explain that peas are the same color as the vine and the leaves. Add to that that the vines are bushy and planted closely together and you’ll see it takes some determination and a good eye to be sure you’ve got all the peas that are ready to eat.

My hubbie planted both Chinese peas (edible pod) and the regular peas that you need to take from the pod. Shell enough peas to have for dinner and you’ll soon decide you like the Chinese peas better. We steam them or just eat them raw.

So, with the peas picked, I decided it was the right time to cook corned beef and cabbage. I’d already bought the corned beef and the cabbage, but I hadn’t found a recipe yet. Well, as any good cook can tell you, there appear to be as many ways to cook corned beef and cabbage as there are cooks to cook it.

So, I had the corned beef simmering on the stove for hours (1 hour for every pound of corned beef), and the vegetables prepared so there was nothing to do but wait and eat.

But wait a minute. How about some freshly baked scones to go with it. Out came the cookbook and I started in. Somehow I mismeasured the flour (too little), didn’t have heavy whipping cream (used 2% milk and a half cup of plain yogurt), and soon was heavy into making my first scones. By now my granddaughter was helping me and we were talking about how an experienced cook just substitutes when she doesn’t have the right ingredients. (She’s already that kind of a cook.)

We were probably doing too much talking and not enough paying attention, because when it was time to turn the dough onto the board and knead it – it looked pretty sticky. I didn’t want to take the time to figure out what my mistake was, so I just turned it out on the board. I couldn’t do much with the dough but coat my fingers 1/2 inch deep with dough. I kept washing my hands and adding flour. By then I realized that I had washed a good part of my batter down the sink. Resolutely I kept adding flour until my goodness! I had something that looked like bread under my hands. So I followed through and finished up, put them in the oven to bake and told everyone not to expect much.

The scones were delicious and just the right accompanyment with the corned beef and cabbage (cooked also with yellow potatoes and onions). It was a fine meal.

I was just lucky. (Luck of the Irish?) If it tastes good the method doesn’t matter – right?

This May Be the Ultimate Blogging Contest

Blog Contests Are Boring

Now normally I wouldn’t blog about a contest. I mean there are so many of them out there and I get tired of seeing them. They all seem the same, jump through 500 hoops and you might win a link on my boring blog. Yawn, no thanks.

This Blog Contest is Not Boring

But this contest is different. The prize list is huge! Lots of good stuff I woudn’t mind having. The prize list is so long I put it at the bottom of the post, but do take the time to look it over. Just be careful not to drool on your keyboard! There is over $100 in cash being offered, (I could use cash!), one person will win 25,000 Entrecredits. That will buy a lot of advertising through Entrecard! But I think the prize I would most like to win would be the one hour consultation with The University Kid.

Why Should I Care About The University Kid?

Now why would I want some young college punk telling me what’s wrong with my website? Because I’ve seen him around in a few forums I visit and I think this kid might be going somewhere. He is working hard at becoming a successful blogger and I think he is going to make it. On top of that His blog, The University Kid, is interesting to read.

How To Enter

I suppose what you would really like to know is how to enter the contest! Here is the link to the Ultimate Blog Contest. Have fun entering the contest, while you’re over there tell him Kat sent you!

If You Have Adsense You Need A Privacy Policy

At the end of February Google changed it’s Terms of Service. Now every adsense publisher must have a privacy policy.
Here is an excerpt from the new terms and conditions.

You must have and abide by an appropriate privacy policy that clearly discloses that third parties may be placing and reading cookies on your users’ browser, or using web beacons to collect information, in the course of ads being served on your website. Your privacy policy should also include information about user options for cookie management.

So I have been spending this evening updating all my sites. I would have been at a loss to write a privacy policy for myself, especially if I had to talk about “web beacons”. But thankfully there are helpful bloggers out in the blogosphere.

Jennifer Slegg of Jensense.com has written an Adsense friendly privacy policy sample and she is graciously sharing it with others. All you need to do is insert your site’s url and you are ready to go. Do you have a privacy policy. Do you think it is OK for Google to require all its publishers to have a privacy policy?

It Was Just One Of Those Days

Have you ever had a day where NOTHING goes right? You start to wonder why you got out of bed at all, and can’t wait for the day to end. Yesterday was one of those days for me.

It started out OK, it was going to be a “kitchen” day. That is when I spend most of the day in the kitchen making bread, granola, and yogurt and whatever else I am going to need for the week ahead. I like to make all of those from scratch because I save a ton of money and I know what is in my food. Plus when I make my own yogurt I am not adding to the tons of little plastic cups sitting in landfills. And of course it all tastes better!

So yesterday I get the bread going in the breadmaker. (I love my breadmaker!) Don’t need to make granola, so I get started on the yogurt. Yogurt is super easy to make. In fact, if all had gone according to plan, I was going to write about making homemade yogurt yesterday.

So I leave the bread rising and the yogurt ah…yogurting and go to work on my business and money forum I have for another one of my sites.

All is going well, until suddenly the forum can’t connect with the database. I have just spent the past few days heavily promoting the forum, and it is getting some traffic, and now no one can connect. ARG! As of right now it is still down. I have a support ticket into my host, hopefully they can help.

When I finally give up on that I hear the breadmaker telling me my bread is done.  But apparently, while I was working on my forum, my bread was not doing its job and rising! I don’t have bread, I have a dense lump of hardened yuck! Well it is edible, but not what I was expecting. I’ll tell the hubby it is a new recipe for some peasant bread and he will eat it.

I check on the yogurt, and it is not yogurt. It is still warm milk. While I was fighting with my forum my yogurt was not yogurting. Well, after 5 hours of sitting at perfect bacteria growing temperature there is nothing to do with that except throw it out.  At least I was only making a small batch.

After my dismal failure in the kitchen it just didn’t seem right to write a post on how easy it is to make your own yogurt. Besides, I didn’t want anything to happen to this site! Yesterday just seemed jinxed. So instead of staying true to my 30 day blogging challenge I went to bed.

Hopefully today is a better day.

When Ethics and Integrity Get in the Way of Making Money

My Daddy once said to me, the only thing you have, that no one can ever take away from you, is your integrity. You can only give it away.  Everything else you have, even your life, can be taken away.   So never, ever, give away your integrity. It can be hard to get back.

I have been seeing a new “make money on the internet” widget popping up on blogs everywhere.  It is a simple concept.  You buy a widget.  You put it on your blog.  When other people buy the widget, you make money. How much money you make depends on how much you paid for your widget.  It sounds simple. It will work, at least in the beginning, and the company that came up with the idea is probably making a killing.

So what’s the problem?

It is just another  pyramid scheme, or ponzi scheme, with a Web 2.0 flair.

There is no real product being sold, no value being given.  Not even a poorly written e-book.  Just the promise of getting money without doing any real work.

The following is a quote from Wikipedia on pyramid schemes.

The essential idea behind each scam is that the individual makes only one payment, but is promised to somehow receive exponential benefits from other people as a reward. A common example might be an offer that, for a fee, allows the victim to sell the same offer to other people, or receive bonuses through other people they refer. Each sale includes a fee to the original seller.

Clearly, the flaw is that there is no end benefit; the money simply travels up the chain, and only the originator (or at best a very few) wins in swindling his followers. Of course, the people in the worst situation are the ones at the bottom of the pyramid: those who subscribed to the plan, but were not able to recruit any followers themselves.

The internet is huge, and it may very well be awhile before this particular scam hits the bottom and people are no longer able to make money. And that is where the ethics and integrity part comes in.

People who get into this right now will probably make a good deal of money. Many people don’t care that it is a scam, and that eventually, some people will get burned.  I have to admit that I had a little bit of temptation to go for this myself.  After all, it is the people who get in early that make the big bucks.  And with the vast market of the internet, it could be a long time before the market saturates and people start losing money.

BUT SOMEBODY WILL LOSE MONEY,BECAUSE THERE IS NO REAL PRODUCT!

And I can’t be knowingly responsible, not even distantly, for someone losing money to a scam.

Now I know probably most of the people who have this widget don’t know that it is a scam. At first glance it does look like a really good idea.  So how can you tell if something is a scam, or a valid money making opportunity.

It is simple, you just have to ask yourself one question.

Can I make money selling this product, without having to recruit anyone else into selling the product?

If the answer is yes, then you have a real product and a real opportunity. (It might not be a great or even good opportunity, but it is a real opportunity.)  If the answer is no, you have a Ponzi scheme.

I’m not going to tell you the name of the widget.  There are plenty of people out there who don’t care that people will lose money, and I don’t want to help them find a new way to scam people.

However, if you have such a widget on your website, do the right thing and take it off.  You may lose some money in the short run, but in the long term, you  keep your integrity, and that is worth more than any money you could earn.

Please feel free to share this information with others. I would appreciate credit and a link back. Thanks.
